Jayson Johnston, DVM

Medical Director

Dr. Jayson Johnston, raised in Seattle, graduated from The University of Washington with a Bachelors of Science in Biology and a minor in Aquatic and Fishery Sciences in 2011. He obtained his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2015 from Western University.

Upon graduation, Dr. Johnston completed a rigorous small animal internal medicine and surgical internship at San Francisco Veterinary Specialists, where he received advanced training in multiple disciplines. Since graduating, he has expanded his scope beyond cats and dogs to include care for rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, reptiles, and fish. He has been a practicing veterinarian in San Francisco since 2016 and is honored to be the founding medical director of SoMa Animal Hospital.

In his free time, Dr. Johnston enjoys caring for his ornamental fish (Mr. Jones, Alice, and Cher), camping, cooking, running track, international travel with his fiance, and spoiling their derpy Bernedoodle (Julio).

Barbara Wood, DVM

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Barbara Wood, a California native, graduated from UC Davis with a Bachelors of Science in Animal Science, followed by her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2015.

Upon graduation, Dr. Wood completed a rigorous small internship at Encina Veterinary Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where she trained in the disciplines of internal medicine, emergency and critical care, surgery, and oncology. Since then, she has practiced general medicine at various veterinary clinics throughout the East Bay and San Francisco. She is excited to be part of the founding medical team at SoMa Animal Hospital.

In her free time, Dr. Wood enjoys exploring various parks and trails in the greater Bay Area with her husband, watching scary movies, playing video games, and spoiling her three-legged cat (Dinah) and sassy red-eared slider turtle (L3-37).

Tate Crawford, BVetMed

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Tate Crawford received his Bachelor of Biological Science from the University of South Carolina (2013) and went on to earn his Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from the Royal Veterinary College (2021) in London, England.

Dr. Crawford has always wanted to become a veterinarian since a young age. When he was 12, he started volunteering with the Army Veterinary services and has worked with animals ever since. He enjoys working with dedicated pet owners, and his mission is to strengthen the human-animal bond. His professional interests include geriatric (senior) care in helping pets who have brought so much joy to their owners over their life, and he wants to provide his senior patients with the most comfort possible during their golden years.

When not working, Dr. Crawford enjoys playing video games, trying new restaurants, and exploring all that the beautiful Bay Area has to offer.
